Don’t leech bandwidth, host it yourself.
Actually, the author explicitly provides an address on each strip “for hotlinking/embedding”, which in general, one would not provide if one did not explicitly condone the practice for one’s own strip. In fact, he states in the xkcd forums specifically in regard to hotlinking that “…theres a reason we list the image link directly below each comic.”
I suggest you have a look at http://www.xkcd.com/license.html – especially the bit about how “you don’t need my permission to post these pictures on your website (and hotlinking with <img> is fine), just include a link back to this page.”
I don’t in general hotlink – it’s not nice, even if the average number of people who actually load the main page of my blog is excessively low. But since I have no idea what his reasons are for explicitly giving people a URL to hotlink from (he may prefer to have control over what gets out there directly), I’m not going to argue with it.
You, on the other hand, can go ride your high horse elsewhere.
